Coin 100 years Woudagemaal

Concept design for the commemorative coin 100 years Woudagemaal. The Woudagemaal is the largest steam pumping station ever built and is still in operation. It represents the pinnacle of the contribution of Dutch engineers and architects to protecting their people and country from the natural forces of water.

The obverse of the coin depicts an abstract polder landscape, representing the land that must be protected and preserved. Above the horizon is a portrait of Willem-Alexander. The reverse side of the coin symbolizes the balance of the water bodies through its equal distribution. The Woudagemaal is subtly depicted from both sides of the dike; it can be seen from both the Frisian basin and the wilder IJsselmeer. A half-turn of the coin reverses the horizon, showing the Woudagemaal from the other perspective. The coin's design is stylistically inspired by the Rationalist architecture of the Woudagemaal.
